Ask at the Visitor Centre to borrow one of our free activity backpacks containing lots of things to help you explore the castle grounds. You’ll even get your own puppet guide – one of our dragons – Norman or Bailey!

Bat Walk at Stafford Castle

Back by popular demand!

Take a walk on the wild side at night. Join the Stafford Bat Group on a walk around Stafford Castle. The experts will guide you and teach you will more about these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat!

Entry is £5 and parking is free for the event.

Limited spaces so pre booking is essential. Please ring or visit the Ancient High House on 01785 619131 to book.

Please be aware that this event has limited accessibility due to the need to enter the woodland off of the main path. We are looking to put on a fully accessible Bat Talk with the Bat Group inside the Visitor Centre at a later date.

Drop-in Trail – Historical Hounds

Are you able to sniff out the answers this half term at the High House?

Whose pet dogs distracted the King in Parliament? Whose pocket beagles sang and danced on the Queen’s table at dinner? Drop-in to the Ancient High House during half term and have a go at our free Historical Hound dog trail!

Izaak Walton’s Cottage Opening Day

Come along to this 16th Century timber framed cottage owned by the celebrated author of ‘The Compleat Angler’.

Open every Sunday from 5th May 2024 to 1st September 2024, 1pm to 5pm.

New for 2024:

  • A modern, bespoke, 10-foot, three-piece dove rod, hand made by the renowned expert fly fisherman, and Staffordian, Bill Tagg.
  • A copy of The Art of Fly Dressing (1970). Both of which were kindly donated by Mr T. Coging.

With free parking on site, light refreshments available, picnic area and a garden.

Stafford Heritage Trail

Take a gentle stroll around Stafford with our knowledgeable guide to see the town in a new light. Learn about the secrets of the buildings and hear about colourful characters from the past.

The tour will last for approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. Meet outside the Ancient High House at 10.30am.

Viking Re-Enactment

On August 10th and 11th, 10am to 4pm, Stafford Castle will be invaded by a Viking horde. Setting up their village and carrying out their day to day activities, cooking, weaving, leather work and other daily chores. Word has it there might be some battles higher up on the castle site as they defend their new found lands. Six Towns Company of Archers will be there to help you learn the skill of archery to defend yourself.
We will also have a Children’s games area, free brass rubbing and if you fancy being a warrior yourself there is armour, swords and shields to try out.
A children’s workshop will also be on site.
Also we have face painting, food and refreshments on site, you are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy the view from the top of the site or sit in the main area.
Dogs are welcome as long as they keep their owners on a lead.
Feel free to enter the spirit of the day and come suitably dressed and keep looking at the page for updates to our line-up. This will be a fantastic day for adults and children alike.
We welcome pedestrians, cyclists, public transporters and taxi drop offs. Event admission is free, if you are driving to the site to park, the charge for the day is £5.
Please note that the car park, axe throwing and other vendors will be cash only.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Spend an afternoon in our cottage garden, perfect for families to bring a picnic and enjoy all we have to offer. Garden games, our Teddy bear hunt, storytelling, magician, seed planting workshop and more.
entrance is free and car parking is £3 for the whole day.

Join us for a relaxed day. refreshments available but do feel free to bring your picnic and blankets to sit on in case the benches are full. Open from 11 till 4pm.

Wildlife at the Castle

A day for all nature lovers with an exotic zoo, birds of prey, alpacas and other animals alongside local produce and suppliers, have-a-go archery, music from local artists, free children’s workshops, hot food and drinks, cakes and jams, ice cream, coin minting, face painting and a trail around our woodland! All this and lots more….
