Workshop – Medieval Inspired Embroidery

Immerse yourself in history whilst creating your own embroidered keyring with a medieval theme.

Join us at Stafford Castle for a relaxed, social evening with refreshments provided. Feel free to bring your own food if required, there will be a break. (Hot pastries are also available to purchase.)
Materials and equipment are included, with guidance on hand. Some previous embroidery experience would be beneficial, but not essential. Free onsite carpark.

Home Educators Day – Tudor Tour Ages 6-11

A day exclusively for home educators.

Spend the day with our guides exploring and learning the history of the 430 year-old Ancient High House. Discuss what Stafford was like in the Tudor period through learning about rich and poor life, fashion, food and drink, social history and the construction of the house. The day will include a wattle and daub activity, dress up and hands-on items.

This tour will be held on Monday 20th April 2026, 10.00am to 12.00pm and is for ages 6 – 11.

Stafford Heritage Trail

Take a gentle stroll around Stafford with our knowledgeable guide to see the town in a new light. Learn about the secrets of the buildings and hear about colourful characters from the past.

The tour will last for approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Meet outside the Ancient High House at 10.30am.

Home Educators Day – KS1 and KS2 Tour

THIS DAY IS NOW FULLY BOOKED

 

A day exclusively for home educated children.

Spend the day with our guides exploring and learning the history of Stafford Castle’s 950 year old Norman motte and bailey castle. Discuss the Battle of Hastings and learn about knights, weapons and armour. The day will include coin minting, hands-on armour and weapons, role play and much more!

This tour will be held on Wednesday 29th April 2026, 11.00am to 3.00pm and is for KS1 and KS2.

Exhibition – The High Sheriff’s Art Competition

Our first art exhibition of the year is now on display until February.

‘The High Sheriffs’ Prison Art Competition’ showcases various pieces art done by prisoners, from memory, with the given theme being ‘All Things Staffordshire’. Come along to have a look at this and the adjacent ‘Borough Broderers’ Exhibition which is running simultaneously.

The exhibition will be running during usual Ancient High House opening hours, Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 4pm. Entrance is free but donations are kindly accepted.

Please be aware that this Exhibition is held on the first floor of the Ancient High House, up a flight of stairs. There are steps to enter into the building and then 17 more wide steps with a handrail to get to the first floor. For toilets, the womens is on the first floor too, a few feet from the Exhibition room. As for the mens toilets, these are up another flight of 17 steps, on the second floor. Historic Stafford staff are always present to assist you if required.

Exhibition – The Borough Broderers

Join us at the Ancient High House for a small exhibition which showcases some of the work done by the Borough Broderers. This group created most of the fantastic embroidery work seen around the Ancient High House, from bedsheets to curtains and footstools.
