Exhibition – ‘Hobby House’ by Maddie Hughes

“Hobby House is a series, visually inspired by movie posters and theoretically influenced by cinema and literature that centre around family dynamics. My intention was to create an exaggerated world in which a bohemian family earnestly pursue their hobbies within their ramshackle, ivy-covered house. Each quirky character is introduced in their own domain, leading the viewer on a journey through the different rooms of this unconventional home.

I wanted to create a project that is not only visually beautiful, but also engages the audience by drawing them deeper into the detail of each scene. The viewer is invited to look closely at the rooms, costumes and objects as well as step back and see the connections between the family members.

The accompanying book to this project is not only a storytelling tool, adding context to the characters, it also gives an insight into the process of creating, planning and execution of the final images; I share my mood boards, sketches, contact sheets and behind the scenes shots.”
